It is with profound personal sadness I write that Don Jakubowski, SFMA Vice Chairman, passed away on July 20th. Don lost his long, hard fought battle with cancer.
Professionally, Don had worked at Hoerbiger Corp. of America in Pompano Beach since 2002 starting as Purchasing Manager then advancing to Vice President of Operations and onto Vice President of Business Development and Government Relations, the job he held when he passed away.
Don joined the SFMA Board of Directors 3 years ago and was slated to become SFMA Chairman September 16th at our 49th Annual Meeting. Don was a huge manufacturing advocate, actively participating in the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Manufacturers Association of Florida (MAF) as well as SFMA. The Board of the South Florida Machinist Apprenticeship Program credits Don's energy and stick-to-itiveness for getting the machining program designed and certified in one year.
Personally, Don was just an all around nice guy. He was willing to help anyone that needed help. Don loved his family and enjoyed traveling, fine dining, NASCAR, and camaraderie with friends and business associates. He will be sorely missed by the SFMA, his friends and associates at Hoerbiger, and the many people whose lives he touched. Of course, he will be missed most by his family - who brought joy to him every day.
Don was one good guy that was taken way too soon!
